Paleontology is the study of ancient life through fossils: the preserved remains and traces of organisms stretching back billions of years. It reconstructs extinct species, shifting climates, and mass extinctions, and together with geology and evolutionary biology, it builds the long timeline that explains how life on Earth came to look the way it does.
